Social Justice
We have an incredibly active Social Justice Ministry here at Holy Spirit with several different sub-committees covering a wide range of social justice issues. Together the Social Justice Committee has identified a set of long-range goals to guide their work to help those in our community, nation, and world in need of the basics of life, including food, clothing, shelter, and health care. We are always in need of volunteers for our activities and appreciate whenever you can lend a hand. We have also formed ad hoc planning groups to assist in planning several of our long-range goals and would welcome volunteers to participate in any of these planning groups, as well as the committee as a whole.
The committee meets monthly on the 1st Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm in the Conference Room. If interested in learning more about this committee, contact Amanda Martinka through the church office.
Ways to Help
We have a variety of on-going and one-time events that are in need of volunteers. Are you interested in helping make or serve a meal at the weekly Community Supper we host for families in need in our area? Are you interested in helping organize our yearly giving trees to local organizations at Christmas time? We have plenty of activities throughout the year in which you can participate!
Refugee Resettlement Committee
As Christians called to welcome the stranger in our midst, we provide compassionate support to people who have fled their homes due to war, violence, conflict or persecution. Partnering with Lutheran Community Services Northwest and others, we assist with resettlement efforts to integrate refugees successfully into new communities, sponsor educational programs to promote fact-based awareness of immigration and refugee issues, and advocate for refugees to ensure justice and inclusion.
Faith advocacy
We are called as Christians to be advocates for those whose voices are too easily ignored. This team's mission is to educate, encourage, and enable our congregation members to take part in advocacy by providing information on local and national issues, letter writing opportunities, candidate forums, as well as visits to the legislature in Olympia and Washington, DC.
Housing and Homelessness Ministry
We envision a world in which every person has a safe place to call home. To that end we support and partner with organizations which provide eviction protection, emergency shelter, transitional housing, and permanent affordable housing.
Inclusion Ministry
Inclusion Ministry exists as a place to encounter, engage, and enrich the lives of people of all abilities by educating to remove anxiety and awkwardness, providing resources, strengthening spiritual connections, providing a safe environment, and providing barrier-free access enabling full participation in worship and service for all people.
Global Ministry
Global Ministry seeks to increase our global outreach to alleviate world poverty. We work to meet immediate needs, as well as working for long-term sustainable change by learning, acting, speaking, and sharing.
