In My Mother's Kitchen

Ice cream at Grandma and Grandpa’s on a summer afternoon was the best! Hesitantly and with uncertainty, yet determined she said to Hannah, “It is… Chocolate.. Chip….LIME ice cream! That is what we have.” I remember even though Hannah was just four years old, she and I looked at each other puzzled. That same afternoon Mom would talk about her microwave “from….the 1940’s, yes! the 1940’s…” Mom didn’t have a microwave until the 1980’s. What was going on? Something seemed different this summer afternoon in my mother’s kitchen.more...

Sugar and Heart Disease

Over the course of a 15 year study on added sugar and heart disease, participants who took in 25% or more of their daily calories as sugar were more than twice as likely to die from heart disease as those whose diets included less than 10% added sugar.  This was true regardless of a person's age, sex, physical activity level, and body-mass index (a measure of weight). (Corliss,2016) Added sugars are sugars and syrups that are added to foods or beverages when they're processed or prepared.  According to the study, most U.S. adults consume about 22 teaspoons of added sugars a day! This is an alarming statistic!  The American Heart Association recommends no more than 6 teaspoons or 100 calories a day of sugar for women and 9 teaspoons or 150 calories a day for men.  A 12 ounce can of regular soda contains about 9 teaspoons of sugar, so consuming only one a day puts all women and most men over the daily limit.  So, reducing soda or other sweetened beverage intake will help tremendously in lowering the amount of sugar consumed. (nd,2016)  Other sources of added sugar include cookies, cakes, pastries, fruit drinks, ice cream, frozen yogurt, candy and ready-to-eat cereals.  Remember when consuming white flour in breads and pasta your body quickly converts it to sugar. more...
