Our Response to Change

Change provides the opportunity to ask ourselves questions: How will I access my faith during times of change? How will I center myself? How do I nurture my faith life? How can I use change to grow? How and When do I take action?more...

Lutherans Welcome Refugees

Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, 'Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him' Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, 'Out of Egypt I have called my son.' Matthew 2:13-15 more...

Sugar and Heart Disease

Over the course of a 15 year study on added sugar and heart disease, participants who took in 25% or more of their daily calories as sugar were more than twice as likely to die from heart disease as those whose diets included less than 10% added sugar.  This was true regardless of a person's age, sex, physical activity level, and body-mass index (a measure of weight). (Corliss,2016) Added sugars are sugars and syrups that are added to foods or beverages when they're processed or prepared.  According to the study, most U.S. adults consume about 22 teaspoons of added sugars a day! This is an alarming statistic!  The American Heart Association recommends no more than 6 teaspoons or 100 calories a day of sugar for women and 9 teaspoons or 150 calories a day for men.  A 12 ounce can of regular soda contains about 9 teaspoons of sugar, so consuming only one a day puts all women and most men over the daily limit.  So, reducing soda or other sweetened beverage intake will help tremendously in lowering the amount of sugar consumed. (nd,2016)  Other sources of added sugar include cookies, cakes, pastries, fruit drinks, ice cream, frozen yogurt, candy and ready-to-eat cereals.  Remember when consuming white flour in breads and pasta your body quickly converts it to sugar. more...

Love is Love is Love...

Justice. Some thought-provoking words have been spoken on this topic in a sonnet, written and delivered by Lin-Manuel Miranda during his 2016 Tony acceptance speech. Here is an excerpt: “…When senseless acts of tragedy remind us that nothing here is promised, not one day. …We live through times when hate and fear seem stronger. We rise and fall and light from dying embers remembrance that hope and love last longer. Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love cannot be killed or swept aside….”more...

Faith is not Just an Intellectual Exercise

Books this month focus on the importance of community and relationship in making faith “real” in everyday life. Pastor Katy shares that “faith isn’t just about what I think or how I think, but how I interact with other people and learn from other people. That I have something to offer the community, and I have much to learn. It’s easy to make faith an intellectual exercise; community reminds us that God is present in the real and messy lives of other people (and in our own).”more...

Faithful Voting

"A loving life flows out of the Love that creates and sustains all things, and beautifies and strengthens that love. It matters. And in that spirit even a vote can be a prayer, an act of love. Even a losing vote matters. It gives voice to the truth, it seeks justice, it embodies compassion and our interwoven-ness with all people."  - Steve Garnaas-Holmes more...
